There
is nothing new in the universe; indeed with language, we all draw
from the same pool of words. It is the way in which we each put
these same words together that we express ourselves as individuals.
As words are used and ideas are exchanged, our shared vocabulary
evolves with new usages and meanings. So it is too with artists and
image.
I seek out, gather and save images, choosing those which have an
expression or shape that is meaningful to me. As I work, I sort
through my resources and select elements from them which I
reinterpret in my work, juxtaposing them with my own marks and ideas
in order to present them in a narrative with new connotations and
perspectives.
These images become a part of the vocabulary that I use as an artist
to tell my stories. All good narratives have elements of emotional
drama, anticipation, and entertainment, and it is these ideas which
draw me to performance as a subject. My challenge is to leave the
story open ended so that the viewer can contribute their own
meanings and interpretations, thus furthering along the universal
dialogue of which we are all a part.
