Artist’s Statement
My passions have always remained the same! I work the New York Times
crossword puzzle everyday because I find nuance very satisfying and
I like structure. I enjoy reading as a way to explore and celebrate
human complexity, and I appreciate other cultures and languages for
the same reasons. I am interested in that which all of us share, and
in celebrating that which separates us and make us each unique.
My art is an extension of these passions. It allows me to explore
visual nuance and look beyond the surface, to consider life as a
history of our personal observations and experiences. In my work,
repetition creates the structure that carries the eye through the
composition and acts as a marker to help us find our way back and
forth between certain experiences. This repetition creates pattern,
introducing balance and harmony while adding complexity, and allows
for an element of chaos to be introduced, creating a dialogue
between the order and disorder that are always present.
My work is an excavation of all the layers which make up who I am.
Each of my pieces is a story told in my own fashion, and as I work
on them, I am always curious to see what chance will reveal.
